Instructions for using compost as a landscape mulch for trees and shrubs

Applying compost mulch to and around the plant greatly reduces water evaporation from the soil, reduces soil erosion, reduces growth of weeds around the plant and also reduces temperature fluctuations in the soil.

Compost increases organic matter levels in the soil and thus increases soil’s productivity.

During cold seasons compost mulch retains soil heat which in turn protects the root system of a plant, promotes rapid root growth in Spring and prevents soil from drying out in Summer.

Step 1:

Evenly apply compost at a rate of 4 to 6 kg. per square meter of soil.

Step 2:

Compost can be applied from wheelbarrow or a dump truck. For small projects it is more convenient to use bagged compost.

Step 3:

Carefully spread compost around trees, shrubs and other plants. Use either rake or a shovel.

Step 4:

Spread compost evenly on the soil surface using a rake to create an even and solid mulch cover.

Step 5:

In case of trees and shrubs compost is applied around tree trunk (see picture) and should not touch the trunk.

Step 6:

After compost mulch has been applied to the soil surface, it should be watered to keep it in place.
